USA Gymnastics is
vigorously advocating for Jordan Chiles to retain her bronze medal from the
floor exercise at the Paris Olympics. In a statement released on Sunday, the
federation announced that new video evidence indicates an inquiry was submitted
within the deadline set by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG),
resulting in a 0.1-point increase in Chiles' score.
This adjustment allowed
Chiles to rise from fifth to third place, displacing Romanian gymnast Ana
Barbosu from the podium. However, the Romanian Gymnastics Federation contested
the decision with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which ruled that the
inquiry was submitted four seconds late, reverting Chiles' score back to
13.666.
The International Olympic
Committee (IOC) subsequently stated that Chiles should return her medal. USA
Gymnastics formally submitted a letter and video evidence to CAS, asserting
that Head Coach Cecile Landi's request to file the inquiry was made 47 seconds
after the score was published, well within the one-minute window required by
FIG rules.
USA Gymnastics is seeking
to have CAS reinstate Chiles' score of 13.766. The CAS ruling on Friday stated
that the inquiry was submitted after the one-minute deadline, declaring it
invalid. The time-stamped video evidence provided by USA Gymnastics shows that
Landi first made her request 47 seconds after the score was posted, followed by
a second statement 55 seconds later.
The federation noted that
the video footage was not available prior to the CAS ruling, which prevented
them from submitting it earlier. The U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee
(USOPC) announced on Sunday that it would appeal the CAS decision, emphasizing
their belief that Chiles rightfully earned the bronze medal and highlighting
critical errors in both the initial scoring by FIG and the subsequent CAS
appeal process.
